welcome to our

SATURDAY EVENING POST

September 2nd, 2023

“Language, in all its forms, remains our means of communication”.

— Charlotte Wall

“The large number of moulds were first separated into three groups: letters, numbers, and symbols. This resulted in 1800 letters of diverse typefaces and sizes which were then polished and sprayed. The letters were organised according to size and placed in trays.”

“It quickly became clear that an element of movement over time was necessary to the composition of the piece. The final draft combines aspects of variation at the top, containment in the body, and dissipation below. Inspiration was pulled from the visual aesthetics of newsprint and the gradual loosening of particles transitioning between solid, liquid, and gas”.

“I am interested in materials that have a history, that is, a previous life. I try to hear this history and respond to it with my art."

As time progresses, traditional language has gradually given way to the digital realm. Alphabet by Charlotte Wall mirrors the captivating evolution of language and our means of communication. The artwork comprises brass letters from New York, originally used as moulds for casting letterpress types. The letters were organised, explored, and meticulously aligned into various compositions surrounding a poem:

This is Not News.

This is Not a Novel.

This is Not a Contract or a Last Will.

This is the Alphabet.

The letterings have been carefully adhered to its corresponding glass panels after their arrangements were finalized. The result is a transformation vividly depicted as letters cascade down the 85” QLED screen, translating the poem into its corresponding binary code. The motion of the binary codes eventually coalesces into a pile of alphabets, creating a seamless, reflective, and immersive experience in harmony with the glass panels.
